Re the stamp duty proposals, you might find this article interesting https://taxpolicy.org.uk/2025/08/21/labour-cgt-on-homes-budget-analysis/ It suggests that less tax not more would be collected precisely because people wouldn’t sell. I’m even more worried about some of the other property tax proposals eg a 1% tax on house value - so a £1M home would be taxed at £10k a year. Too many people still seem to think that because someone lives in an expensive house (by national standards) they must be on a high income. Even for me, as someone fairly sympathetic to a ‘moderate’ Labour government, such a tax would send me running into the arms of a Conservative Party who, in its current incarnation, I deeply dislike. Another concern are some of the proposals re pensions eg to limit the tax free lump sum to £40k. One can only hope these speculations remain just that. |
