It was TW themselves who confirmed the problem at Strand on the Green was down to misconnected sewers. There may be a broken pipe somewhere in the network nearby but this wouldn't necessarily account for the poop in the water.

If it was standard practice in pre-Victorian times for houses to discharge foul water straight into the river, that raises the interesting question of whether this is a right you retain due to long usage or if some owners of older properties in the area are going to be faced with a big bill to put things right.
