It had very little to do with competition at a local level but much more to do with a woeful under-delivery of service. Nothing to do with cuts as the privatisation began under a Conservative administration but continued unbated, actually gathering pace when Prescott was effectively planning supremo as Deputy Primeminister during all 13 years under Blair.

We are not talking fire safety alone here but overall inept and ineffective inspection regimes which happen whether the sector is public sector or privatised.
