There is no direct connection between the Tideway Tunnel and Mogden. However, the tunnel does take sewage from the Western and Chiswick low level sewers which previously went to Mogden, and now this instead goes to Beckton. This takes the pressure off Mogden and reduces storm discharges. As the Thames is tidal it isn't relevant whether you are up stream or down stream of the Tideway Tunnel, the culverts discharging sewage during storms will have polluted the water upstream of Kew Bridge so the Tideway Tunnel should have significantly improved Chiswick water quality. There is a storm discharge at Kew Transfer which is directly across the river from Hartington Road. The monitors don't seem to be working there and I don't know whether it benefits from the Tideway Tunnel or if it is still discharging. Thames Water's web site says it will be 'up to government standards' by 2040 but I would guess that as the Tideway Tunnel has increased overall system capacity, there has been a big reduction in discharges from here as well. Certainly people I know at local rowing clubs say the water is better (although far from perfect). |
