| Ed, that is how the members of our local fringe pressure group including the Chiswick Conservative Councillors salve their consciences. They convince themselves that opposing each and every individual scheme to reallocate road space away from cars is consequence-free for road safety, health and the environment. They falsify the trade-off between driver privilege and impact on those greater goods as inconsequential by mocking the idea that any single road change or cycle lane could make any difference, insult the intelligence of those who support such ideas and categorise them as effete wealthy elites detached from the reality of how real people live their lives. They attribute conspiracy theories to them such as there has always been a secret intention to evict much-loved traders from their businesses and replace them with purveyors of champagne, caviar and croissants. They ignore every study, every expert and all evidence that shows that it is the accumulation of these schemes that makes remarkable positive differences to society, public health, economic prosperity and the environment. They tune in to shock jocks and jump on every clickbait article in the MSM to hoover up the uninformed opinions and misinformation they crave to reinforce their prejudices. It is a deliberate self-delusion that is vital to maintaining the construct of their self-image as good moral citizens. But let's say it how it is - these people are anti-safer streets, pro-pollution and pro-global warming. More injuries, illnesses and deaths from dangerous roads and pollution and ever-increasing emissions contributing to global warming are the unavoidable consequences of their pro-car campaigns being successful. These people are not the good moral citizens they are so desperate to believe they are. But it is now marginally easier to hoy several bags of dirty washing out on Devonshire Road so every cloud. |
