| What a shame the experiment is being reduced to evenings when one of the most successful parts of it was the weekend daytime footfall. I wish they’d extended it to allow more hospitality to use the road and pedestrianised all weekend to allow for the markets and other commerce. Credit where credit is due - Councillor Biddolph fought hard to reverse the changes before they became too established or popular. The survey she told us on here she conceived, designed and even hand delivered was a large part of that. When it didn’t quite get the predetermined outcome she wanted, she just misrepresented the results. Of course other councillors, including Sam Hearn, are also preeminent in the “parking not people” pro car and anti “militant” cycling lobby. However, there is fault on the council for this. They should have worked harder to make Devonshire Road a showcase for the success of People First and Business First policies. The reactionary right has won this one. However, they usually find themselves on the wrong side of history - eventually progress happens. |
