| My sisters and I grew up cycling everywhere, our bikes were almost like another limb. We were out on them all day, in all weathers, no helmets of course. In those days with few cars, cycling was fun and relatively safe - yes we got grazed knees and elbows from falling off but that was it. We often did not need to lock our bikes unless in a town. We knew how to pump our tyres, mend a puncture and had bells to warn pedestrians or just for fun. It was a different safer World. "Sit up and beg" bikes with wicker shopping baskets were the order of the day for older ladies, very few had anything resembling a racing bike, dropped handle bars were strictly for really speedy chaps and we all had both tail and head lights. Policeman Plod was on a push bike too as was the postman and some delivery boys. Cycling was a safe means of transport and pleasurable but with all the traffic on the roads, it is not now. Fumes, congestion, buses, lorries, vans, cars, lycra-clad racing cyclists and careless pedestrians it is a nightmare and simply dangerous. |
