Edward that post is not true in a number of respects: - There is manufacturing here: actually more than in the 50s by value but much less in share of GDP and in employment and we are still in the top 6 or 7 manufacturing countries with strong positions in (for example) aerospace, alcoholic spirits, pharmaceuticals, racing cars - Whilst it is true the world's biggest bank is Deutsche Bank, 3 of the world's top 10 banks are British (more than any other country) I suspect the German banks are paying proportionally much the same tax here as the British ones - ie not much, as they will use sophisticated tax avoidance measures, especially Barclays - I suppose it depends on your definition of a global product. Without research I can say that the hovercraft was a UK invention as, arguably, was the world wide web, usually credited to Tim Berners-Lee. I believe text messaging was a UK invention and the smart card a French one. Oh, and Viagra, amongst many drugs. Float Glass invented by Pilkington. |
