I have been trying to research Business rates in other countries but haven't been able to find many comparisons: I think most countries have a system of some sort but they often have a different basis and are called different things. However I have found the answer for Ireland: they have a system called 'Commercial Rates' which on the face of it seems remarkably similar to the UK system. The difference is the level of charges: in England it is about 43% of the rental value. In Ireland it varies according to local authority but from a few examples I found it ranges from about 65% up to about 70% so it seems UK business rates are a bargain by comparison! |
