| Tom, I am not a big enough expert on the subject but one of the common comments made over the years in this forum is that many of the "finest specialist retailers" do not come to Chiswick because of the poor "retail layout footprint" of many of the real estate sites that come up vacant and for renting. I have always taken this to mean a mix of limited frontage, poor storage and access at the rear, with overall depth/square footage of the shop from the entrance makes the rent cost versus business profit opportunity in W4 a poor choice. Plus Westfield has "taken" as a fact many of the "premier" brands located in this general geographical area and one assumes between here and Richmond in one direction and Kensington plus Knightsbridge and the West End in the other direction. Maybe Hounslow and Ealing could do more to improve the local public area and facilities infrastructure but on the actual buildings there is probably little they can do. To be honest I think Chiswick has a unique quirkiness (in much the same way Clapham Common and Islington High Street have) which I actually value rather than replicating other more successful locations. Devonshire Road followed by current steps around the TG Terrace area show that new approaches by local retailers might be the better answer and not waiting for Ealing or Hounslow Councils to get their acts together. If the relevant retailers disagree then putting a well formulated case to the local Councillors may be the better initial step? |
