What does it have to do with the Council? It has a lot to do with the Council, it's their High Road and they have to help make it competitive. Their business rates are too high, several retailers have said that, the streets in the area are poorly maintained with uneven and broken surfaces, poor drainage and puddles when it rains, and rubbish regularly piled up in the streets during the shopping day. Yes there is parking at Sainsbury's but at the Hammersmith end of the High Road it is difficult to find parking at off-peak let alone peak times. I don't drive but I see others driving around and then giving up. And yes, Chiswick has had a fairly good mix of outlets(although the High Road has appeared in the Clone Towns Top Ten) but that's obviously under threat if so many outlets are upping and leaving at the same time. I agree Chiswick is not as badly off as towns in the North, but there isn't actually a recession in London and Chiswick is very rich compared to most parts of London let alone the rest of the country. It's odd that the finest specialist retailers are little represented on the High Road and I expect the Council to show leadership in trying to rectify that. |
