River Cafe wanted to take over Adamou's but they wouldn't meet the valuation. Then Jamie Oliver looked at it and the same. So he has taken Villandry and is opening in March. But it is only partly down to greedy landlords. Having had a gossip with local restauranters this week it is not just high rents that are the problem. One of them told me that Chiswick customers will not pay £14 for a quality hamburger wheras those in Chelsea and other areas will. Wimbledon Wine has a top quality range of wines and it is only the Chiswick branch that is quiet. So Chiswick people need to get out there and spend some money if they want to have upmarket shops. Having said that, i am now going down the supermarket to shoplift some Valpolicella. |
