As predicted the motion advocated a Referendum was defeated in the House of Commons tonight. That was inevitable given the fact that all 3 major parties decided that their MP's should vote against the motion and issued 3 line whips to enforce the parties' line. Nevertheless over 80 Conservative MP's and about 20 Labour MP's defied the whips. A powerful message has been sent to the leadership of the Conservative and Labour Parties. The Prime Minister and the Conservative leadership did not dispute the case for a referendum. Once again a referendum has been promised if any new EU treaties are proposed. |
