Two facts about referenda in this country: One - they are never held on questions which the people might want to give their opinion on, but only on those matters which politicians choose for us, and two - they will not be offered unless the politicians think they will get the answer they want. The last one in which we were involved was on the question of the AV voting system, a question which the general public had not asked for and which was not a matter of popular debate. It was a piece of self-indulgence on the part of the Lib-Dems and was quite rightly given short shrift. Unlike the othere parts of the United Kingdom, England is never allowed a referendum on anything, even though this country was affected by the results of the referenda in the other three parts during the last few years. The referendum on the Lisbon Treaty was ducked first by Brown, then by Cameron. So, don't hold your breath waiting for a referendum on any aspect of our relationship with the EU, because it is a popular topic and the results of such a referendum would probably be extremely problematic for whichever government was in power. |
