To be fair to Mary she was elected on an "in Europe not run by Europe" manifesto. The 2010 manifesto said nothing about a referendum on Europe. What David Cameron asked for was a referendum ahead of the Lisbon Treaty - something that other members states did manage to provide for their citizens. A referendum on Lisbon would however have derailed the right honourable member for Sedgefield's plans to become President of the EU so clearly us plebs could not be allowed a democratic vote on it. For what it is worth, I think that John Connolly is someone worth listening to. You may not agree with what he says but he usually endeavours to be both "witty" or "informative". As a rooky councillor I much appreciated the often statesman-like contributions that he made to Borough Council meetings. |
