"..when we all have more important things to worry about". Again, can you name a few of these "more important things"please. As far as I am concerned, the future of my country, its people and its ability to self determine vital issues is pretty important. Presumably you are pro-EU then, as the free trade area has added more to our wealth than most other initiatives from the last 30 years (along with cheap goods from Japan and China and the effects of 'big bang' on London as a global city). Self-determination would be less outside the EU than in it (as we would have to adhere to the rules if we wanted to trade tariff-free, but we would be excluded from designing them). But the issues I was thinking of were mainly economic: the EU is concerned with the Eurozone crisis and the UK with how to cut the deficit whilst growing the economy. Most of those issues are specific to the UK or the Eurozone block of countries. The UK is an open economy with a flexible labour market. I can't see that a renegotiation with the EU would make much difference to those issues. It would be a diversion. And a referendum on a vague question relating to a diversion would be a complete waste of time. |
