Guy I have in fact written to Mary Macleod MP asking her to vote for a referendum. However as she is a PPS within the Ministry of Justice presided over by Kenneth Clarke QC MP, I do not expect her to defy the Conservative Whips on this issue. Irrespective of the outcome of tonight's vote, if a significant number of Conservative MP's defy the Whips and vote for a referendum, that will strenghthen David Cameron's hand in dealing with his Eurfederalist Lib Dem Coalition partners and in any future negotiations regarding (a) Britain's contribution to euro bail-outs (b) increasing EU powers as demanded by the unelected President of the EU Commission (c) any new EU Treaties and (d) securing a repatriation of powers to the UK thus reversing the Treaty of Lisbon (the EU Federalist Constitution in disguise)so furtively and dishonorably signed by Gordon Brown. In general the vast majority of Conservative MP's are in agreement regarding the EU. The difference is over tactics rather than strategy, policy or principles. There is a small minority of Eurofederalist Conservative MP's in favour of further surrendering British democracy, freedom and sovereignity to the EU. There is also a larger minority of Conservative MP's who favour withdrawal from the EU and joining the European Economic Area along with Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. In contrast the Lib Dems are Eurofederalist and the Labour Party is completely and utterly confused, opportunistic and leaderless. |
