Apart for the quite sensible popular support for having a Mayor of London and Greater London Authority, there was no popular demand outside London for a referendum on regional authorities because there was no popular demand for regional authorities. The whole idea of regional authorities stemmed from the EU Federalist wish to break up the nation states of the EU and replace them by regions similar to the lander of Germany and the regional governments of France, Spain and Italy. There is however a popular demand for a referendum on a much more important issue - the relationship between Britain and the ever more ambitious and controlling EU. |
