For the record - I do not support a referendum on "in, out or shake it all about" at the present time. On getting elected the Coalition Government passed a law that says that if the members of the EU ever wish to change its constitution (the so called treaty)then the electors of the UK will be granted a referendum that will ask if they accept the proposed changes. This will be the time for the UK Government to begin "full and frank" negotiations. It seems to me that the leaders of the Euro Zone are moving inexorably towards further and much closer fiscal and monetary integration. This will require changes to the EU constitution and it is at this point that the citizens of the UK should be offered a referendum. It seems highly desirable to me that the referendum on Scottish indpendence should be held before any referendum on the EU constitution/treaty particularly if the Scots were to vote for full indpendence. |
