In trying to move this debate onto new aspects, the earlier references to recreational drug abuse and excessive drinking by retired persons has a nice counter point in a Health posting on the BBC's news website. This reports a claim that many medicinally prescribed drugs given to over 65s for ailments and especially where more than one is being taken, can have a cumulative anticholinergic effect. The end result is high dangers of impacting the brain and increasing risks of dementia. Which as our bodies are kept alive longer seems to be the worst case scenario of having diminishing mental faculties! |
