Try writing down all the things you think you will need, from money for transport (you will probably need to take the occasional cab even if they still have bus passes by the time you retire) to bills, household cleaning stuff, getting carpets cleaned, dry cleaning, toiletries, council tax etc. Be realistic, it is very easy to underestimate. If you really itemise it all it is quite scary. I was amazed when I wrote down how much all the essentials are likely to come to, let alone any money for 'luxuries' such as the occasional cab (public transport doesn't always go where you need to go); trip to the cinema, bottle of wine to take to a party etc. Just to say you think xx would be enough without writing it all down is putting your head in the sand. Oh - and then allow for inflation. |
