Might we have got all this old age / retirement / waiting / decline thing all muddled up? There is an unthought through acceptance that we hang around until every bit of us stops working. All our finances need to planned for this, half of our health care and social care are geared to support this, and our younger relatives dread the onus of care, etc. etc. Blimey - even our purchase of the place to live accounts for this. Do we really want to live as long as possible regardless of the quality of life? What if we decide to simply name a date or an age? Something like "I'll pop me clogs when I finally get to 80." (If I get that far.) I can then plan all the good stuff I want to up to that point - rather say I'll do it but put it off for another year. I can run a planned wind down of my savings - thus freeing up the money to do these things. I can happily drink myself stupid when I want - the health service need not worry about the expense and effort of looking after my failed organs in my final years - I'll be in a box. No cost. My relatives can sleep happy - certain of no drawn out care obligation. And equally certain I'll spend all my money on me. Ha! Ain't that a better plan? |
