Transport costs in your retirement can be high. Only the fit can take advantage of a a free bus pass! As soon as you are no longer fit enough (or the route becomes too risky - poor pavement condition, too far to walk, no seating in hospital lobbies etc) to travel this way you can become marooned. Visiting a sick partner in hospital by cab can be very expensive. You might want to go every day especially if he/she needs help and encouragement with eating/drinking. Food is a problem in hospital. (You should ALWAYS check that your relation IS eating properly. Nursing staff may not take account of side effects of drugs/whether false teeth are needed and the food may not be suitable or/and served soup/second course/pudding and tea all at the same time and so only the first course can be eaten hot and anything else that should have been has become unappetising.) The number of elderly in hospital with poor sight and poor hearing is very large. They consequently take longer for nursing staff to understand and deal with - that is if they do bother and can take the time. Consequently the elderly don't eat and drink and get better as fast as they might do making it harder for them to get back on their feet and believe it or not OUT of hospital. There are not enough nursing staff on the wards. |
