It does make you wonder. People talk about living longer which is very true, but the majority of people are not actually in good health. If the official retirement age is raised, does that mean that if people are out of work then officially they will be entitled to unemployment benefit or job seekers allowance up until the point that they can claim their pension!? I can’t see their being a state pension in 20 years time or if there is it needs to be a completely different model, separately enforced by the government, you cannot opt out. Yes yes, democracy and freedom of choice etc but look where that has lead us. Also an education drive would not go a miss in our schools, the importance of saving over materialism is absolutely imperative. Most people I know live beyond their means, clothes, eating out etc etc etc all come first and if they have a little left over they may stick a little away each month in a pension or savings account, but it is not enough the take care of them in old age. Yes most of us want nice things, but people have to wake up that this country is sitting on a time bomb. |
