Peter, Your key word is "deliver". More research always sounds good, but in this case there are fundamental technological problems in producing aircraft that are both low noise and low emissions. For instance open rotor engines are being advocated for better fuel efficiency, but they're much noisier that existing jets. I can't see any way a third runway could put in use and both meet the existing legally enforced noise restrictions and keep to the aviation industry's "target" of emissions restricted to 2005 levels. Make both restrictions law, and my objections would certainly disappear, as would any chance that BAA would actually put in a planning application for a third runway. |
