Greenpeace have put up a number of internal ?BAA documents related to Heathrow Expansion released "heavily redacted" under the Freedom of Information Act. http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/heathrow/baa-files One of these includes the cryptic comment "technological developments such as curved approaches might come into play in the MM timescale....potential new technologies should be touched on in the consultation." Perhaps the nice straight lines for aircraft approach running along the High Road may not be right ? Google tells me that MLS (microwave landing system) is a potential replacement for the standard ILS system and ?trial units have gone in at Heathrow. Anyone know more ? (Apparently recent versions of Flight Simulator for your PC enable you to do fancy curved approaches to land at the old Kai-Tak runway in Hong Kong !) |
