Tina, this bit of the thread is a response to Peter Poulton saying that the last Conservative government did nothing good. Most of the thread is a debate about Alistair Darling's rather ineffectual budget, which I found preferable to that of Geoffrey Howe in 1981 (?) in that it is not actually harmful - in fact it does not really do very much at all, probably because Gordon Brown, who when Chancellor refused to tell the Prime Minister what was in his Budget, has laid down the rules for the next three years and has left Chancellor Darling very little room for manoeuvre. I can't agree with David Giles's implication that the Blair/Brown government is as bad as the Wilson/Callaghan one, as compared to that shambles at least they have not fatally undermined the strong economy they inherited from the Conservatives, and the UK is still better-placed to weather the predicted economic storms than we were in 1979. Equally, as with the Darling budget, they have not really progressed the country very positively either. |
