What is your definition of bleak? The economy is expected to grow by around 1.75% this year, unemployment is at historic lows (and employment at record highs), interest rates relatively low (16% may have been short lived, but I was paying a heck of a lot more for my mortgage through the 90's), inflation well under control if not as low as we'd like it, and Govt borrowing is low by international standards despite enormous investment in government assets in recent years (anybody been to West Middx hospital recently?) Yes, there will be a mild slowdown this year, and there's a risk it will turn worse, but there is nobody credible suggesting we will have the meltdowns we experienced in the 80's and 90's. |
