Richard - A "tax regime that favoured traditional English ale over lager" be illegal under EU law (Directive 92/83/EEC) and under the EU Commission's "national treatment" rule. This is because such a move would be regarded as discriminating against imports from other EU states. In October 2006, the EU Commission published its communication on "alcohol strategy". This means more EU legislation is in the pipeline, which will undoubtably give the Darlings of this world less room for manoeuvre on taxing booze. |
