For all the declamatory statements claiming that Sir Sadiq has destroyed London or that he has turned it into some sort of crime hellhole, nobody has yet to put forward a cogent argument that he has done a bad job. If the case for the prosecution is that TfL tried a new fare system and abandoned it when it proved not to be successful, the defence can rest. This goes a long way to explaining why he has won three elections. As far as I can see, looking at the evidence and trying to make fair comparisons he is doing a reasonable but not exceptional job. He is hard working and not venal, he appears to be courteous and even his opponents have warm words about his personality. However, from time to time, even with his wealth of experience, he can look slightly out of his depth. There is certainly a case to say that London deserves a better Mayor (although one has yet to be presented to us) but there is no good reason to have a vehement dislike of him. |
