Bandying figures around can be pretty meaningless without context. If there is a push on knife crime you might expect figures to drop e.g. if more people are aware they are more likely to get stopped and don't want to risk it, or you might expect figures to rise e.g. you are more likely to get stopped and found carrying a knife, so it wouldn't be a surprise there are more offences recorded. More meaningful (perhaps) would be the stating the number of knife attacks resulting in death per 100,000 people and how these compare with the overall figure nationally. |
