There is some validity to the claim that TfL has not adhered to high standards in its use of statistics and he must bear some responsibility for that but it is not a flaw that can be said to undermine his whole three terms. As for knife crime, the recent tragic events have put it in the spotlight again but it bears repeating that the rise we have seen is a national phenomenon and London had done slightly better than the national average. For those demanding he call for an immediate change in policy on prison terms for knife possession, they should perhaps note that the Met or those in the justice system more widely are not saying they want this. What we do know is that tougher penalties for weapon possession introduced previously have made gangs more likely to get minors to carry them until they are needed. Whether the recent deaths are a result of this, we won't know until more details emerge but it should serve as a caution to those who believe there are easy solutions. |
