I do. It would be to our advantage. As one of the big three economies within the Eurozone we would be perfectly placed to take a leading role and shape the future of the continent, rather than bellyaching about it, pooling sovereignty rather than isolating ourselves in a world that owes us no favours at all. Any trade deal, anything at all gives up a measure of control. If you want the UK to stop pooling sovereignty entirely, we'll have to scrap all 14,000 treaties we've signed since 1834 - 700 of which have arbitration mechanisms for determining disputes over interpretation like the ECJ. Negotiations tend towards being dry affairs that reward an obsession with detail, one reason amongst many that Farage, Davis, Johnson, Raab et al ran for the hills is that they all seem to have an aversion to hard work and struggle mightily with detail. The tabloid press seem to have got their ideas about deal-making from reruns of "Dallas" banging your fist on the table and "being strong" is all you need to worry about, apparently. Having negotiated commercial contracts for a living over the last 25 years I think I can safely say that I know what I am talking about, well, better than the average journalist or MP anyway and listening to that lot makes me cringe. As a major state within Europe we would have absolutely nothing to fear from closer integration, however I completely accept that my position is in a tiny minority. We had the best of all worlds really, in, with a range of opt outs, the EU owed us no further concessions, no member state had a better deal, a shame that malcontents had to take a wrecking ball to it, let us hope parliament is capable of pulling us back from the brink. |
