I see no difference between harassment in a street and harassment in a communal corridor in a block of flats. I see no difference between preventing people canvass between detached houses and preventing people canvass between flats. I was pleasantly surprised when you indicated, initially, that you wanted to ensure free and fair elections and uphold the law. I am disappointed now that you wish to just brush it off, and are not prepared to say to your members that canvassing and leafleting may not be universally welcome by everyone, but it is part of the political process, and that it is inappropriate for your members to decide to prevent voices other than your own being heard. Given that you are a Magistrate, I had hoped for a more robust defence of the democratic process from you. You say it happens all the time to you. I consider that to be a real problem. Securing clarity on this matter and knowing where ones stand is important. I hope you will think on this and support my effort to get a definitive answer as to whether one resident in a block of flats is allowed to prevent a political party to contact all other residents in that block of flats. |
