The difference, of course, is identity and geography. Scottish people are as defined as such, as is the country. A country which has been governed from Westminster (and largely still is) for centuries but in light of England's decision to leave the EU has and should decide whether Scotland goes it with England outside the EU (those much promised sunny lands ahead) or with its existing markets in the EU. Maybe a few banks might want to relocate to Edinburgh? I can imagine London would love to stay in the EU, for all the same reasons. But England without London? Really? Anyway, all the arguments about this campaign by the SNP should also be used with the current Westminster government. Will of the people - yes, apply to both as the people in each place voted. Should be busy sorted the many local crises (NHS, social care to name but two) yet willing to let itself be distracted by Brexit. Any other arguments - maybe you don't like some SNP politicians? Yup, many would happily use the same criticism about the current Westminster government. If you believe in Brexit then you believe in an independence referendum - you can't (nor can May) have it both ways. That's simply hypocritical. |
