At the time of the 2014 Scottish Referendum the unionists insisted that Scotland could only stay in the EU if the people voted "no". They promised "the most powerful devolved assembly in the world" if people voted "no". They also stated that the UK would consist of countries that were equals. Following Brexit May has insisted that the majority views of the Scots and Northern Irish will be ignored. Those who voted "no" in 2014 are being taken out of Europe against the majority of their wishes, and the Scottish Parliament, unlike the Walloons in Belgium, is toothless in the face of Westminster dictat. I suspect that Cameron only allowed the 2014 referendum because he expected a comfortable negative vote. The SNP may yet discover that, like other English colonies, violence is required to remove the imperial masters. |
