ITV had the F1 coverage from 1997 until 2009 during which time it improved immeasurably, with background interviews pre & post race analysis and the like. The coverage in the days of Murray Walker was often appalling. No on site reporters for the fly away races, commentary done back in a studio in London from a TV feed, and race coverage ending pretty much as soon as the chequered flag fell, ITV forced the BBC to up their game significantly. However when they won the coverage back it unfortunately happened to coincide with a global recession, and with less money being available, and F1 a hugely expensive sport to cover properly they were forced to first co-share with Sky, and ultimately to give it up altogether.

I'll be interested to see how C4 do with their coverage, but have a feeling the underlying problem won't be addressed. Audiences are falling, and although Bernie will never come out & say it F1 probably needs free-to-air broadcasting more than free-to-air broadcasting needs F1. I've heard the Sky F1 coverage is very good, but I manage very well without Sky and I'm not getting it just for F1, which, I think is part of the problem, not enough people are subscribing.
