Julian, your points are well taken, but it is all about a sense of perspective and proportion: Yes, people around Gatwick are impacted and would be "up in arms", but we are talking about: - 4.000 homes and being compulsory purchased vs. 186 at Gatwick - 725,000 people already directly under the Heathrow flight path (that is before R3). That is 25% of all the people under flight paths in the entire EU. Gatwick doesn't even register on the scale. - Heaven forbid, if a plane came down, for whatever reason (lasers are a red herring, but terrorism and genuine accidents cannot be discounted), the devastation over London Would be an order of magnitude greater than over Sussex countryside. I don't know how any politician could justify increasing this (admittedly small) possibility by 50% when a viable alternative exists. You are right that up until now, people have been disengaged/unaware/apathetic. As I posted earlier, there has been no real consultation with people living in areas affected, so why should they have thought seriously about it? However I sense that it is only now that awareness and opposition (thanks to CHATR and similar groups) is really taking off. |
