Plane Stupid were claiming after their protest today that 'Activism like this forced Cameron to make that election pledge in 2009.' i.e. No ifs, no buts, no third runway. However, this doesn't seem to square with the facts - as far as I'm aware there was no Plane Stupid activity at Heathrow until earlier this year. Cameron made the very unwise pledge at that point because he knew that the Third Runway was very unpopular in a number of key marginal seats including the two ones that cover Chiswick. Sure enough his party won those seats. Next time around when his manifesto commitment was to implement the Davies Commission report those seats were lost. Plane Stupid are simply against any growth in air traffic. I would imagine CHATR and the average Chiswick voter don't share this view and accept that there will be more planes in the future but just want them to land somewhere else Their spokesman on LBC today was totally incapable of putting together a coherent argument about what they were hoping to achieve other than inconveniencing people using Heathrow. |
