When I started reading the Davies report I was hoping that it would not create a convincing case for more planes flying over my house. It gave more time to the estuary airport project than it deserved but it quickly became clear there were two viable options - expand Heathrow or expand Gatwick. The case for Heathrow does present a huge range of difficult challenges but if you take the time to read the report and see how, compared to the only alternative, it is the better choice, you may accept that these challenges will be overcome. There are drawbacks with Heathrow but the drawbacks with Gatwick are far more significant. If you read the report you will see that both sides of the argument are set out in some detail and no attempt is made to ignore the negative aspects of each option. There is no sense that the issue was prejudged. It is clutching at straws to say that because politicians who have constituencies that are overflown by Heathrow are against expansion that there is a level of opposition that will thwart the third runway. |
