You can't blame Burgess or the decision to select him for England's exit but the decision making that led to it is symptomatic of a number of other issues in the England camp. You've got to wonder if Lancaster himself genuinely believed that Burgess was the right choice. Was Lancaster put under pressure by the RFU because of the money they'd spent on Burgess? Or put under pressure by Andy Farrell to select Burgess? (Farrell being another successful league player who was fast tracked to international union and was pretty mediocre) Either way, it doesn't reflect well on Lancaster. I don't think that necessarily condemns him as all coaches make mistakes and need to learn from this experience but the RFU probably didn't intend this RWC to be one of those mistakes... |
