The number of professional players in the English game is still considerably higher than the other countries mentioned. There are 12 clubs in the Premiership and even allowing for non-English players, that is a much bigger pool to select from than Ireland with 4 professional teams and the SANZAR teams with 5 Super Rugby teams each. I really don't think the pipeline of talent is the issue for England. There could be the best schools, academy and club system in the world but you still can't stick a player in an international team and expect them to perform without developing their experience in international rugby and they need a coherent gameplan to play to. |
