Er no. He referred to the relatively poor performance by England in 1999 and talked about the need for stability. He explicitly said that England's underperformance since the World Cup was because they had started from scratch too many times when new coaching teams were brought in. If anything it sounds like the RFU had already approached him and he had told them not to be ridiculous. The RFU will be desperate to make a popular appointment to get themselves out of the spotlight. Putting a great former player in charge would achieve that objective but as you saw with Martin Johnson, it doesn't often work. |
