Francis...you make a very valid point regarding England's success at junior level. Why hasn’t that been translated into success at senior level? Maybe youthful exuberance and the resultant lack of respect for their ‘apparent’ betters negate the lack of belief suffered by the 6 nation’s seniors when we play NZ & SA? How many of us have walked onto a pitch full of self-doubt because of the history associated with the opposition? It must be the ‘system’ that’s letting the potential shown at junior level dissipate? Look at the relative success of the Irish provinces, based on a small playing base and less comparative success at junior level. What are they doing right? And yet Welsh teams perform very poorly at regional level and yet have possibly the successful 6 nation’s record for some time now? Lots of contradictions / confusion in my previous paragraphs, so maybe it’s a conundrum that can only be discussed and arguably concluded post the 10th Guinness? |
