I think the traditional right/left alignment is becoming less reflective of modern-day politics. UKIP's anti-EU stance was held in the past by many people who would regard themselves as left-wingers (the most obvious being Anthony Wedgwood Benn) and there remain many on the "left" who would still agree with that, while throwing their hands up in horror at the idea of voting UKIP. Nevertheless, UKIP is not seen as hard-right or far-right in the way the BNP or NF were, which is why it attracts far more votes than they ever did. |
