The challenge Alex, though it is very hard to prove I accept, is that the British electorate is predominantly "conservative" (with a small "c") in attitude and temperament despite many feeling we are a very liberal and democratic nation at heart. That trend has probably been shored (though the overall percentage figures are relatively small) by immigration over the last 50 years from countries with in culture and religion a more conservative approach to life than many UK born nationals - only time will tell as we move into the second UK born and raised generation if that bias changes. My feeling from looking at the election results many time and the way the Tories leadership were behaving up to the final results is they did not expect to win. Now they have and given the temporary disarray of the opposition they are maximising the opportunity they have. Labour is only going to make an impact when having elected a new leader they develop some long term strategies that are new, different and strike a chord with enough of the electorate to start gaining some traction. Neither Blair, Brown or Miliband could lay claim to that achievement I would suggest. |
