I don't think people are trying to dictate where the opposition must or must not come from, David. If an opposition party wants to maintain a left-of-centre position, that is their choice; they may feel comfortable, righteous, or even morally superior in this position, but in this country they probably won't be elected to government. It is fatal to imply to an electorate that they are wrong and you are right, and that they must therefore make an effort to meet your standards. This is simply a fact of UK politics, not a diktat about how opposition parties must align themselves. |
