But then the party merely becomes a recipient of protest votes, gets ever more marginalised and spends even more time side-lined. Much like the socialist workers party, which nowadays is nothing more than an amusingly anachronistic rent-a-mob. You talk of a them betraying their roots, what, I think, would be more of a betrayal would be to make themselves so unelectable as to ensure these people were never represented. Would you prefer 50% of something, or 100% of nothing? Labour need to decide whether they stay in their comfort zone of the protest vote, or make the hard choices to gain actual influence over events. Moving ever further to the left will not make them a party of government. |
