It would appear from most of these posts that people want an effective opposition but it must not be from the left / centre-left. Perhaps a left wing party is "irrelevant" and can not command a majority from the country. I do not believe we need another centre-right / right party. There are already plenty to choose from; Conservative, Lib Deb or UKIP. Certainly working conditions, health provision, pension provision, education are far better than when the Labour party was formed. How much better as a result from unionisation and pressure from the left is debatable. Unfortunately such progress is being undone. Capitalism is enjoying a period of unfettered growth. If people believe this will result in further improvements to health care, education, welfare then their choice is clear. For those of us who see this is not the case we need a Labour Party that remembers why it was set up in the first place. |
