I don't think anyone's saying it "must" not be from the left, what I am saying is that the Labour Party seems not to have learnt the lessons of the last five years in opposition, and the recent electoral defeat. Retreating to your core vote may feel comfortable, but it won't get you elected, parties do not govern from the margins. The Labour position at the moment is like a school child on being told their answer is wrong, giving the same answer in a louder voice. It is as if they are saying to the electorate "no no no, you got it wrong, now listen carefully this time". Labour have a stark choice they can lead from the centre vis 1997 - 2010 or they can retreat further to the left, in which case I think the period they spent in opposition 79-97 might look like a short coffee break by comparison. |
